How should we use cables correctly?
2023-11-30 10:34:54

Meet the small breaking load (MBL)

MBL is the key performance of the ship. The length of the cable must comply with the ship's design standards.

Use cables in good conditions:

The melting point of the cable is low, so the ship Mooring Rope cannot be used in an environment with a temperature above 70°C.

Choose the appropriate rope diameter according to load requirements.

Recommended mooring rope length is 220,300 meters, or as per customer requirements.

Avoid overloading

The cable should not be used too close to its high capacity as the large amount of energy accumulated will cause the cable to degrade. Special attention must be paid to crawling phenomena, such as when the cable becomes stiff and the cable becomes difficult to separate.

Avoid rope temperature rising too quickly

To avoid rapid temperature rise in certain parts of the rope, do not allow the spare rope to rub against the cable.

Precautions for using winch

a. Extra care: Cover metal surfaces (especially wedges) with PES microdermabrasion clothing to better protect against wear and tear

b. Unwind the coil: The coil must be able to rotate freely (vertically or horizontally) and untie the rope. Carefully wrap the rope around the storage barrel using a suitable device. Use a small reference tension, but pay attention to tension and speed levels to avoid generating too much heat due to friction/wear. A roll must be as tight and secure as possible to avoid the roll slipping off the top of the coil.

c. Unwinding from the reel: The reel must be able to rotate freely (vertically or horizontally) and unwind the rope from the top of the reel. One layer must be as close to the wound as possible. The next layer should be stacked on top of the previous layer in a valley or cross fashion. Do not add another layer on top of the previous layer.

d. Extremely poor drum condition (signs of rust, sharp surfaces), resulting in extreme wear of the cable. Rough surfaces can damage the rope's sheathing.

The surface of the winch should be clean and smooth, otherwise it should be polished and painted.

The ambient temperature in storage or work areas should not exceed 70˚C.

When the cable is under tension, stay away from the rebound zone, as shown in the picture below. The rebound response of the cable is very small and very limited, almost negligible, but it is beneficial for personnel to become familiar with the properties of synthetic cables.

Severe twisting of the rope is not allowed. Four turns every three feet (or one meter) will result in a 10% to 30% reduction in strength.

Avoid knots at all costs. They can reduce the strength of the thread by 50%.

Avoid shock loads (always use mooring tail). Whenever the rope comes into contact with metal surfaces (drills, bollards, wedges, etc.), use anti-wear tools regardless of the condition of the equipment.

Flip your mooring line over every six months (pull the back of the line to the front or vice versa) to spread wear and extend its life.
