What is the history and use of cables?
2023-11-30 11:03:28

Cables have properties such as tensile strength, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, flexibility, lightness and softness, and are used to tie multi-strand ropes to ships. It is required to have properties such as tensile strength, impact resistance, wear resistance, flexibility, lightness and softness.

The earliest iron cable was invented by W. Albert, a Saxon mining official, from 1831 to 1834. It was used for hauling and lifting in mines. It was stronger than hemp, so it quickly became popular in mines; and in 1839 Introduced to the UK by L. Gordon in 1998.

In the past, steel ropes, hemp or cotton ropes were commonly used; after the emergence of synthetic fibers, they are mostly made of nylon, polypropylene, vinylon, polyester, etc. In addition to light specific gravity, high strength, good impact resistance and abrasion resistance, synthetic fiber cables have the advantages of corrosion resistance, mildew resistance, and insect resistance. For example, the strength and abrasion resistance of nylon cables are several times higher than those of hemp and cotton cables. The specific gravity of polypropylene cables is smaller than water, so they can float on the water and are easy to operate.

According to the processing structure, chemical fiber cables are divided into two categories: 3-strand, multi-strand twisted cables and 8-strand, multi-strand braided cables. The general diameter of 3-strand cables is 4 to 50 mm, and the general diameter of 8-strand cables is 35 to 120 mm. In addition to being used for ship moorings, chemical fiber cables are also widely used in transportation, industry, mining, sports and fishery. According to the needs of special applications, metal materials can also be woven into the cable core.
